There are reports of two incidents of break-ins and vandalism in Soho Square – the other at number 26, Amalgamated Film Importers. (These are not the only two film businesses in Soho Square.)
The group gives thought to setting up a private investigation business, as a front for their real investigations; this might coincidentally give them an excuse to talk to people at the National Provincial Bank, under the guise of looking for advice on company formation. Audrey makes an appointment for that afternoon.
Before that, they visit Wigson’s home. The front door is unlocked, and while there’s a place for a doorman he doesn’t seem to be there when they arrive. There’s an automatic lift, but the group take the stairs; there are four flats per floor, with Wigson’s on the third floor at the back. The door is closed with a policeman in front of it, and there’s no obvious magic, so they walk past him to the fourth floor to decide what to do next. The flat above Wigson’s is locked.
The group hears the policeman saying “Afternoon, Inspector – all quiet”. Lin Tan gets a brief glimpse of the Inspector taking his hat off as he enters the flat and closes the door; the policeman outside stays at his post.
At the top of the stairs there’s a door to the attic, with an open padlock on it; this gives access to the glass of the skylights over the stairwell, and therefore to the tiles of the roof. Lin Tan reckons she could probably climb up, over the angle of the roof, and down the stone-faced wall to Wigson’s window; there’s a coil of rope in the attic, in reasonably good shape.
The doorman’s cubby is still unattended; Milly and Audrey have a poke around while Lin Tan keeps an eye out, and take the spare key to Wigson’s flat as well as several others selected at random.
