Tuesday 16 September 1930

Fifty-seven minutes and thirteen seconds after midnight, there’s a flare. Several of the group had set alarms, and they find a location about ten miles south of central London. They proceed to Sutton, which at this point is still a separate town in Surrey, and quickly spot the blaze; it’s a large detached house, thoroughly on fire, and with shine pouring from one of the rooms.
