This area to the west of Libya was colonized by Greeks in the C7th BC. From 322 BC, it was held by Egypt under the Ptolemies. It was left to Rome by Ptolemy Apion and became a Roman province. It was conquered by the Arabs in the C7th AD and by Turkey in the C16th. Italy conquered it in 1912 and developed it as a colony. The British caputered it in 1942 and it became a province of the new kingdom of Libya in 1951 but was later split into several smaller divisions.
