The most common modern Italian first names are those of saints recognised by the Catholic church. Many of these are of Greek or Latin origin. Regional influences, such as the name of the local patron saint, are also present. In medieval times, well-omened phrases or epithets such as Bonaventura, Diotiguardi, were used as names but few of these remain popular.
