Thursday 7 August 1930
Lin Tan and Gertrude, lightly disguised, follow Peters to work: he walks to Holland Park station, takes the Central London Line to Bank, then walks towards Leadenhall Street. Gertrude is feeling uncertain of her shadowing abilities and has dropped back; Lin Tan spots Peters talking to a policeman, then passing on, while the policeman starts looking around, perhaps for her. She ducks down a side street to avoid him and circles to try to catch Peters, but he’s gone.
There’s nowhere from which to keep an eye on the office during the day, but Gertrude and Lin Tan change their appearances and spot him as he re-enters Bank station. Again, Gertrude hangs back; Peters seems to be in a rush, but as Lin Tan rounds a corner she finds herself grabbed by him. He asks what the devil she thinks she’s up to; she mutters something, breaks free and runs.
Back at the house, Preston doesn’t know anything about the construction of a cellar; it might have been before her time.
