Saturday 27 September 1930
Signs of shine appear on Plumstead Marsh, just east of the Arsenal complex; Gertrude rushes through the foot tunnel and collects the others, and they go into the marsh. Bessie moves ahead and spots seven figures, coming to the end of a call-and-response chant; they’ve very visible magically, but fade out of normal vision, and start to walk towards the arsenal, passing a sentry who apparently doesn’t spot them. Bessie throws a stone at the leader – the woman from last night – which distracts her, but doesn’t apparently spoil the invisibility. They all turn and look, and one of them points – not towards Bessie but off to one side. They move over that way to search; Bessie throws another stone, and this time they spread out and start moving towards her. Bessie hides, but one of the searchers finds and grabs her; she appears to be shouting, though Bessie can’t hear her. Bessie manages to get out of the grapple and push hard against her shine, making her visible again; the shouting becomes audible. Audrey shoots a crane in the Arsenal, mostly to attract attention, and Gertrude starts pushing at the shine on the others; after a few seconds there’s a sound of whistles as the sentries call for assistance.
Bessie gets an amulet off her attacker, then manages to hide by conventional means before the patrol arrives. The other six retreat; Gertrude pushes more, and they become clearly visible. Their leader is talking about “laying down our lives for the cause”; she draws a pistol, fires a couple of shots in the general direction of the patrol, then ducks behind a shrub and vanishes magically; the patrol, having been fired on, fires back. The fight ends quickly, and some of the anarchists are still alive to be arrested.a
