Apache

Names

A heavy Spanish influence is evident by the C19th. Mexican nicknames were common and some captured children were brought up by Apaches. English nicknames were less frequently used - Tsoe was called 'Peaches' because of his fair complexion and 'Geronimo' was sometimes shortened to 'Gerry' which he apparently disliked. After they were settled on the reservations, many children were sent to the Indian Industrial School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania where most adopted English names. Apache names were often retained by themselves and their descendants as surnames. Some intermarriage occurred.
