(Dictionary of Names)

Names of German Origin

George of Hanover became king of England as George I in 1714. The family continued to intermarry with German nobility, providing a further source of Germanic names. Some are cognates of names which were brought to England by the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Another modern source of German names was the large influx of immigrants to Britain and America from the late C19th onwards.
