The group arranges a meeting with Miss Allen at the bookshop the next day. Milly does her best to get things put on a more formal basis, with official status and support, and while Miss Allen is broadly sympathetic she is crushing by nature.
She does confirm that the five of them are the only people who’ve responded to the invisible notices; and that Miss Marsden claims to be able to see the significance of things, and that after this incident Miss Allen is more inclined to believe that. Milly invites her along to the prize-fight that evening, and she agrees.
At the fight, there’s no sign of anyone with the shine. Miss Allen shouts knowledgeably (“keep your left up”). Both the boxers in the main event are local lads, and popular with the crowd; Battling Tom Smith wins.
