Mr Orr turns out to have “run mad” and gone overboard somewhere in the western Mediterranean.
Several of the group spend some time working through Miss Marsden’s books; they’re pretty impenetrable. (Audrey reckons that about two-thirds of the way through the first book there’s a major change in direction.)
Audrey gets a large corkboard, a map of London, pins and ribbons.
Bessie arranges a meeting with Miss Marsden, and asks about how the invisible writing was done. She explains… probably… but it gets very alchemical, starting with her blood, and the “red man” gets in there somewhere.
