Kate Monk's Onomastikon

(Dictionary of Names)

Czech and Slovak Names

This section was compiled before the division of the country into two states but as they have closely related languages, first names are very similar. They are often vernacular forms of Western saints' names but, similarly to Polish, there are a number of Slavonic dithematic names. As in other Slavonic languages such as Russian and Polish, pet forms of names are used in most everyday situations. They are formed by adding a new ending to part of the original name.
